Voted one of the Ten Best Green Household Products by The Independent
The original Eco Balls! Ecozone Ecoballs® are an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional washing powders and liquids. Simply put the three Ecoballs® into your washing machine instead of detergent, et voila! Clean clothes. Eco balls ionize the water, allowing it to get deep into your clothes and lift the dirt away. Good for up to 1000 washes, which works out cheaper than 3p a load! (Based on a 30 minute cycle). Rinse cycles can be shortened, and the Eco balls won't damage or fade clothing. Also, they are fully hypoallergenic, which is good news for people sensitive to phosphates and optical brighteners.
Don’t forget to buy your Ecoball Refill replacement sponge rings!

Like other reviewers, we’re very impressed with the results of washing with eco-balls. However, there are a few things that we didn’t know until we received them – which we think purchasers should know about as they raise the question just how eco are eco-balls? First, you are advised only to fill your machine with three-quarters of a normal load, to allow the balls room to move around. So that means that for every three full loads we now have to do four washes. Secondly, you cannot use any water-saving function that your machine may have (other than cutting out a rinse, if you can). (We always use the time saver anyway, so no advantage there.) Thirdly, the instructions state that you can avoid a rinse cycle by using ‘Rinse Hold’. However on our machine, which is only two years old, ‘Rinse Hold’ does not mean ‘no rinse’ – it simply means the machine rinses and then holds i.e. leaves the water in so you can drain or spin later. Finally, the leaflet suggests that to clear your machine of old deposits in the pipes, and keep it free of limescale, you run an empty cycle, using vinegar for cleaning, once a month – at 95 degrees!
I still approve of these in principle – clean , easy, no chemicals, no packaging, and economy in direct comparison with powders. But overall, in terms of water and energy? Hmmm, the jury’s still out.

The ecoballs work exceptionally well. i have found clothes don't need any fabric conditioner and smell nice. (although some people may want to add some conditioner.) I would recommend running a cleaning cycle on your washing machine before the first use.
The ecoballs even managed to remove 99% of lily pollen from a white shirt. I soaked in handwash and vanish for a few hours but the stain didn't change. washed in a normal cycle with the ecoballs and the stain was gone with only three tiny specks left :)

I have been using these for over a year now and think they are great for day to day washing. if i have something that is really stained i treat it first but with the majority of stuff its fine. the only problem i have had is a slight musty smell after long use. apparently this is not to do with the balls but rather a build up of scum and limescale in the washing machine which is usually masked by conventional detergents. I read that putting a 50:50 white vinegar/water solution in on an empty wash with a high temp flushes it all out. it works fine for me. i do it about once every 3 months.

Q: Hi,
I bought some of these a few months ago and am very pleased with them however I do have one question. How ashall I know when to put the replacement pellets inside the balls? Thanks.
A: The pellets will, over time, dissolve and disappear; therefore, when you can no longer see or hear them, it's time to replace them!
(The manufacturer states that this should be after approx 1000 washes)

Q: Can you use fabric softner with these balls. I know it says that you don't need it, but if you have guests it is nice to make the lining smell nice.
A: According to the manufacturers..."You should find that the garments are naturally soft without the use of fabric softener. If you do miss the synthetic smell we suggest that you only use an Eco softener such as Ecover, but do not add it to the wash. When the wash is complete remove the Ecoballs™ add the softener and switch the machine on to a short rinse" John.

Q: I recently read in Ethical Consumer that some "eco-washing balls" are made from PVC. Are these PVC free? Thanks
A: I am pleased to tell you that Ecozone Ecoballs do not contain any amount of PVC whatsoever. Marty

Q: What makes the difference between the 1000 wash ecoballs and the 150 wash ecoballs?
Are the refill pellets specific to each one, or can you use any ecoballs refill products (i.e. are ID31767 and D18202 interchangeable?)
Thankyou.
Martha-Louise.
A: Hi Martha-Louise, there are two different types of eco-balls and two different refills which are specific to those eco-balls. The original Eco Balls last for up to 1000 washes and match these refills. There are alternative ecoballs which last for 150 washes and these have their own refills. I hope this is helpful. Robyn.

Q: Does Fabric conditioner ruin eco balls? I used fabric conditioner with them a few times before I realised I wasn't meant to and want to make sure they're still working ok!
Thanks
A: Hi, Ecozone state that "You should find that the garments are naturally soft without the use of fabric softener. If you do miss
the synthetic smell we suggest that you only use an Eco softener such as Ecover, but do not add it to
the wash. When the wash is complete remove the Ecoballs™ add the softener and switch the machine

I hope this helps. Robyn.
